History

The Diamond Springs Hotel has a rich history and is an important part of California’s gold country.

Located in El Dorado County a little over 3 miles south of Placerville, on historic Highway 49, the town of Diamond Springs was built around beautiful clear water springs. During the Gold Rush, this town was a rest stop on the Carson Emigrant Trail.  The discovery of a 25 pound gold nugget by a Missouri pioneer convinced many Missouri immigrants camping in Diamond Springs to settle and construct the town’s first clapboard buildings.

The town was also a Pony Express stop during the brief time that the Pony Express existed. The town was once considered as a site for the county seat. Lumber, lime, and agriculture, along with looking for gold, were early pursuits here.
